I had my first long flight on this trip in the beginning of December. It was divided in two parts because of the stop at Christmas Island. We didn't change planes, so I didn't even walk on the island. During that flight I moved to the other side of the international date line, from the past to the future in comparison with Europe. Although my travel lasts 80 days in London time, the sun rises and sets only 79 times. Phileas Fogg went to the east and therefore had shorter days, but made it back on time, because when he thought he came back to London late it had been only 79 days in London time.
Honolulusta lähtiessäni oli tiistaiaamu. Kävin syömässä vielä yhden hedelmäkipon Jamba Juicessa.
When I left Honolulu it was Tuesday morning. I went to eat one more fruit bowl at Jamba Juice.
Lentokentällä olisi pitänyt olla kolmea tuntia ennen Fiji Airwaysin ohjeiden mukaan. Olin reilu kaksi tuntia ennen, ja aikaa jäi jälleen reilusti yli. Tämä oli ensimmäinen kerta, kun minulta kysyttiin paperiversiota matkasuunnitelmistani, eikä iPadillä ollut versio kelvannut.
You should have been at the airport three hours before the fligh according to Fiji Airways. I was there little bit more than two hours before, and I again had plenty of extra time. This was the first time when I was asked a hard copy of my travel itinerary, and the one on iPad wasn't good enough.
Lento meni mukavasti. Tämä oli tämän matkam ensimmäinen lento, jolla tarjoiltiin maksutonta ruokaa – Fiji Airways kuuluu siis niihin yhtiöihin, joka yhä tekee niin. Joulusaari vaikutti varsin erikoiselta paikalta, ja näkymät lentokoneesta olivat sinne laskeutuessa upeat. Valitettavasti minulla ei ole näköaloista kuvia, mutta voit kysyä Googlelta. The flight went well. This was the first flight on this journey, where they served food with no extra charge on board – Fiji Airways seems to be one of the companies, which still does that. Christmas Island looked like a really special place, and the views when landing there were magnificent. Sadly I don't have any photos from the views, but maybe you can ask Google. Joulusaarelta kyytiin tuli uusia matkustajia. Juttelin uusiseelantilaisen miehen kanssa suurimman osan matkasta. Fidžillä oli ukkosmyrsky, jonka keskellä laskeuduimme lentokentälle. Näin yhden upean, ison salaman. Ukkosen takia matkatavaroita ei voitu ottaa lentokoneesta, joten jouduimme odottamaan niitä puolitoista tuntia. Tähän mennessä viivytyksiä matkanteossa ei ole juurikaan ollut – ainoastaan junamatkalla Floridassa, ja nyt tämä. Lopulta sain tavarat ja pääsin läpi tullista nopeasti. Majapaikan emäntä oli luvannut olla vastasssa, mutta hän oli joutunut lähtemään kentältä viivytyksen takia, joten menin sinne taksilla. Vaikka matka oli kestänyt noin 10 tuntia, vuorokausirajan ylityksen takia Fidžillä oli saapuessani keskiviikkoilta.
There came new people on board from Christmas Island. I talked most of the time with a guy from New Zealand. We landed to Fiji in the middle of a thunderstorm. I new one, big lightning. Because of the thunderstorm they could't get our luggage out from the airplane, so we needed to wait for the about an hour and half. This far I didn't had many delays during my trip – only the one during the train ride in Florida, and now this one. Finally I got my luggage and got through the customs quickly. The innkeeper lady had promised to be at the airport when I arrived, but because of the delay she had gone, so I took a taxi to the accommodation. Although the travel time had been about 10 hours, because of crossing the international date line it was Wednesday evening when I arrived to Fiji.
