Tomorrow morning I continue from Fiji to New Zealand. In this blog post I return to Maui, which is my favourite destination this far.
25/80: San Dieco, CA - Maui, HI 24.11.2014
Maanantaiaamuna herätyskello soi jo puoli neljältä varhaisen lennon takia. Jaoin Uber-kyydin kentälle toisen hostellivieraan kanssa. Kentällä oli suht rauhallista – olisin ihan hyvin voinut tulla paikalle ainakin puoli tuntia myöhemmin.
I needed to wake up early on Monday morning for my flight to Maui. I shared an Uber ride with another guest of the hostel. I could have easily arrived to the airport at least half an hour later as there were no long queues.
Alaska Airlinesin lento San Diegosta Mauille kesti noin viisi tuntia, ja aikaeron takia saavuin Havaijille pian yhdentoista jälkeen paikallista aikaa. Näkymä jo lentokoneen ikkunasta ja sittemmin lentokentältä oli upea! Etsin ensin taksia, mutta taksikuskin pyytämä summa muutaman mailin matkasta tuntui kohtuuttomalta. Menin bussilla ($2) kauppakeskukselle asti ja jatkoin siitä taksilla hostellille ($12).
Alaska Airlines flight from San Diego to Maui took about five hours, and because of the time difference I arrived to Hawaii around 11 am local time. The view already from the airplane and at the airport was breathtaking!

Valitettavasti päivä oli pilvinen ja sateinen, ja minulta oli mennyt paljon aikaa hostellille tulemiseen ja asioiden selvittämiseen hostellilla. Siksi päätin vain kävellä ympäri Wailukun pikkukaupunkia. Päivä muuttui paljon paremmaksi löydettyäni pari mukavaa puotia! Ne olivat Wahine Love ja Curious Imports, joihin molempiin suosittelen lämpimästi tutustumaan:
Sadly the day was cloudy and rainy, and I had lost a lot of time when coming from the airport to the hostel and at the hostel, so I decided only to have a walk in Wailuku. The day got a lot better when I found these two nice shops, Wahine Love and Curious Imports, which I highly recommend:
26/80: Maui helikopterista / Maui From the Helicopter 25.11.2014
Tiistaiaamuna lähdin liikkeelle ennen puoli kymmentä, ja löysin oikean bussipysäkin kohti Kahuluissa sijaitsevaa kauppakeskusta. Bussikuskilta voi ostaa neljällä dollarilla päivälipun, ja koska luulin palaavanikin bussilla, hankin sellaisen.
On Tuesday morning I left from the hostel before 9.30 am, and I found the right bus stop towards the shopping center.
Havaijilta lähti jälleen muutama postikortti kohti Suomea. Aloitin näiden kirjoittamisen aamiaista odottaessani Koho's-ravintolassa ostoskeskuksella.
I started to write some postcards when I was waiting for my breakfast in the restaurant Koho's at the shopping centre.
Ehdin vierailla tässä museon ja matkamuistomyymälän yhdistelmässä nimeltään The Story of Hawai'i Museum ennen lähtöäni helikopterikentälle. Suosittelen käymään! Olin tietenkin aivan myyty, kun huomasin Elvis-aiheiset kuvat ja julisteet.
I had some time to visit this combination of museum and souvenir shop called The Story of Hawai'i Museum, before I left to the heliport. I recommend a visit here!
Iltapäivällä vuorossa oli Mauin ja koko matkan yksi odotetuimmista kohokohdista, puolentoista tunnin helikopterilento Blue Hawaiianin helikopterilla ($385). Aamu oli ollut pilvinen, mutta onneksi sää selkeni iltapäiväksi. Valitettavasti emme voineet lentää saaren eteläosaan siellä olleiden pilvien takia, mutta kokemus oli silti unohtumaton. Suurin osa kuvista lennolta on aiemmassa blogipäivityksessä. Suosittelen yhtiötä sekä hyvän lennon vuoksi että siksi, että he olisivat antaneet rahat takaisin tai muuttaneet retkiajankohtaa halutessani, koska lentoa saaren eteläosaan ei voitu tuolloin toteuttaa.
In the afternoon was the time to the one of the most expected highlights of this trip, an one and half hour helicopter flight by Blue Hawaiian ($385). It had been cloudy in the morning, but luckily the sky cleared quite much before afternoon. Sadly we couldn't fly to the south of the island because of the clouds there, but the experience was anyway unforgettable. Most of the photos from the helicopter tour are in the previous blog post. I recommend the company first of all because of a nice flight, and second of all, because they would have either given my money back or re-scheduled if I would have wanted so before the flight, because we couldn't fly to the south part of the island.
Samalla helikopterilennolla ollut pariskunta vei minut takaisin hostellille, mikä oli todella ystävällistä. Hostellilla tapasin toisella Havaijin saarella asuvan naisen, jonka kanssa lähdin käymään Whole Foods -kaupassa ruokaostoksilla. Oli hassua huomata kaupan hyllyllä Pandan tuotteita! Illan vietin hostellilla.
A couple who was on the same helicopter flight took me back to the hostel, which was very friendly. At the hostel I met a woman who lives on another Hawaiian island, and we went together grocery shopping to Whole Foods. I saw on the shelves also Finnish Panda products! I spent the evening at the hostel.
27/80: Lahaina, Maui 26.11.2014
Vietin keskiviikkopäivän Lahainassa saaren länsirannikolla, jossa oli aivan erilainen sää Wailukuun verrattuna. Päivä oli todella aurinkoinen ja lämmin. Mauille tulijat, menkää Lahainaan! Sinne pääsee bussilla (päivälippu $4).
I spent Wednesday in Lahaina on the west coast of Maui, where the weather was complitely different compared with Wailuku. The day was really sunny and warm. That is why if travelling to Maui, you should definitely go to Lahaina. You can take the bus there (day ticket $4).

Iltapäivällä kokeilin paikallista herkkua eli shave icea. Se siis on jäälastuja, joiden päälle kaadetaan makusiirappia. Tarjolla on useita paikkoja, mutta Ululani's oli saanut hyvät arviot TripAdvisorissa, ja suosion voi päätellä myös jonosta:
In the afternoon I tried a local delicacy called shave ice. There are many places who sell it, but Ululani's had a good review on TripAdvisor and you could also figure out something based on the queue:
Kävin iltapäivällä 1,5 tunnin retkellä puolisukellusveneellä (vajaa $50). Harmillisesti retken pitäjät nostelivat mereneläviä heidän elinpaikoiltaan, mikä ei mielestäni ollut mukavaa. Maisemat olivat hyvät niin veden alla kuin Reefdancerin kannelta.
In the afternoon I went to a 90 minute semi-submarine tour (about $50). Sadly they lifted creatures to the window from the bottom of the sea, that I didn't like at all. The views below the water surface and also from the deck of the Reefdancer were good.

Illaksi menin perinteiseen Old Lahaina Luau -juhlaan. Ruoat, juomat, aktiviteetit ja esitykset sisältyivät lipun hintaan ($109). Old Lahaina Luau on erittäin suosittu, joten lippu kannattaa hankkia ajoissa. Itse sain tietää peruutuspaikoista edeltävällä viikolla. Ruoka oli todella hyvää, ja sisälsi paljon paikallisia makuja.
I spent the evening in a traditional Hawaiian feast, Old Lahaina Luau. Food, drinks, activities and the show are all included in the ticket ($109). Old Lahaina Luau is very popular, so book your ticket in advance to get your seat. The food with many local flavors was really good.
Palasin illalla Wailukuun kahdella bussilla, joten minun piti lähteä luausta hieman ennen kuin show päättyi. Seuraavana aamuna oli aika jatkaa matkaa Honoluluun. Maui vastasi korkeita odotuksiani osin pilvisestä ja sateisesta säästä huolimatta!
I returned to Wailuku by two busses, so I needed to leave some time before the show ended. Next morning it was time to continue to Honolulu. Maui met my high expectations despite of partly cloudy and rainy weather!
