I am now in a small town called Russell, a ferry ride away from Paihia, in northern New Zealand. Here's my travel story from Hawaii, O'ahu, two weeks ago. I enjoyed my time in Waikiki and surroundings a lot. Luckily the weather was excellent if you don't count a few raindrops.
28/80: Maui, HI - O'ahu, HI 27.11.2014
Torstaina oli Thanksgiving eli Kiitospäivä, joka tuntuu olevan Yhdysvalloissa melkein joulua isompi juttu. Perheet kokoontuvat yhteen joko koteihinsa, tai matkustavat yhteiselle lomalle. Minä matkustin tämän karhun kanssa, joka oli liittynyt seuraani tiistaina kyllästyttyäni kuulemaan jatkuvasti kysymyksen, olenko matkalla yksin. Vastedes olen ajatellut vastata matkustavani karhun kanssa.
On Thursday it was Thanksgiving, which seems to be almost bigger deal than Christmas in the United States. Families gather together either in their homes or travel on a holiday together. I was travelling with this teddy bear, who had joined me on Tuesday after I got tired of the question, if I am travelling alone. From now on I have thought to reply, that I am travelling with a teddy bear.
Olin ajoissa kentällä, koska hyödynsin hostellin maksutonta shuttlepalvelua. Hawaiian Airlinesin lento Kahuluista Honoluluun kesti vain 35 minuuttia. Perillä hankin shuttlekyydin (meno-paluu $27) hostellille.
I was early at the airport, as I took advantage of the free shuttle ride that hostel offered. The Hawaiian Airlines flight from Kahului to Honolulu was only 35 minutes. When I got there, I ordered a shuttle service (return $27) to the hostel.
Hostelli, Waikiki Beachside Hostel Lemon Roadilla, vaikutti mukavalta. Tapasin hostellihuoneessa muita asukkaita, joiden kanssa lähdin illalliselle ravintolaan nimeltään Eggs'n Things auringon jo laskiessa ja myöhemmin yksille läheiseen baariin.
Waikiki Beachside Hostel at Lemon Road seemed nice. I met in my room a couple of women that I went to dinner with to a place called Eggs'n Things when it was already sunset, and later for a drink to the bar nearby.
29/80: Pearl Harbor 28.11.2014
Heräsin perjantaina aikaisin aamulla, koska olin päättänyt lähteä tuona päivänä Pearl Harboriin. Selvitin aamulla oikean bussin ja lähdin matkaan kahdeksalta. Bussimatka kesti yli tunnin, mutta päivä oli pitkien bussimatkojen arvoinen. Ostin Honolulussa kertalippuja bussiin ($2.50), koska en käyttänyt sitä niin paljoa. Toinen vaihtoehto olisi ollut ostaa neljän päivän lippu ($35), jos bussia olisi käyttänyt enemmän.
On Friday I woke up early in the morning, because I had decided to go to Pearl Harbor that day. It took over an hour to get there by bus, but it was definitely worthwhile. I bought single tickets ($2.50) as I didn't use bus that much. If I would have used the bus more, another option would have been to buy a 4-day ticket ($35).
Kuvat Pearl Harborista ovat pääosin aiemmassa blogipäivityksessä. Vierailin U.S.S. Arizona Memorialilla (maksuton; erillinen audio-opas $7.50) ja U.S.S. Missourilla ($25). Alueella olisi ollut myös Pacifoc Aviation Museum ja sukellusvene. Näihin kaikkiin olisi voinut hankkia combolipun, mutta kohteita olisi pitänyt kiertää ripeämmin, jos olisi aikonut ennättää kaikkiin samana päivänä. En halunnut pitää kiirettä enkä myöskään hukkua informaatiotulvaan.
Photos from Pearl Harbor are mainly in the previous blog post. I visited U.S.S. Arizona Memorial (free of charge; additional audio guide $7.50) and U.S.S. Memorial ($25). There is also Pacific Aviation Museum and a submarine at the area, but you should have been quicker to go to all four in one day. I wanted to take my time and.there was already enough information provided in the museum at the U.S.S. Memorial visitor centre.
Paluubussia odottaessa huomasin pysäkillä pariskunnan, jonka nähdessäni mietin, että olisivatkohan he Suomesta. Epäilyni vahvistui, kun kuulin heidän keskustelevan. He sanoivat miettineensä minusta ihan samaa. Paluumatka Waikikiin menikin todella nopeasti matkakuulumisia vaihtaessa. Jäin bussista ennen pysäkkiä, joka olisi ollut lähinnä hostellia, koska halusin nähdä vähän Waikikia ennen kuin aurinko laski. Auringon laskiessa vietin pientä piknikkiä rannalla.
I met a Finnish couple at the bus stop on the way back to Waikiki, so the journey went really quickly. I got off from the bus before the stop that would have been the nearest, as I wanted to see a little bit of Waikiki before the sunset. At sunset I had my own little picnic at the beach.
30/80: Rantapäivä Hanauma Bayssä / Beach Day at Hanauma Bay 29.11.2014
Lauantaina halusin jotain raikasta aamiaiseksi, ja menin Jambo Juiceen ennen lähtöä Hanauma Bayhin.
On Saturday I really wanted something fresh for breakfast, so I had a berry and fruit bowl and freshly squazed orange juice before I left by bus to Hanauma Bay.

It took about half an hour to go to Hanauma Bay by bus. Photos from there are mainly in the previous blog post. There's an entrance fee ($7.50). Because it is a nature reserve, everyone who comes to Hanauma Bay needs to see a 9-minute video in the "movie theater" before entering the area:
Yllätin itsenikin viihtymällä rannalla koko päivän. Käväisin jopa uimassa.
I surprised even myself by spending the whole day at the beach. I even went swimming.
Tapasin sveitsiläisen Rachelin hostellille palattuani. Olin ajatellut mennä edellisenä päivänä huomaamaani sushiravintolaan syömään, ja hän liittyi seuraani. Ensin kuitenkin menimme katsomaan auringonlaskun rannalle.
When I came back to the hostel I met Rachel from Switzerland. I had seen a sushi restaurant nearby on previous day, and I had thought to have a dinner there. She joined me. First we went to see the sunset at the beach.
Sushi oli erinomaista Furusato Sushi -ravintolassa. Söin sekä Hawaiian Sunset -annoksen että Philadelphia-rullan. Kävimme vielä drinkeillä Tiki's-baarissa hostellin lähellä. Siellä tapasimme juuri Minnesotasta Havaijille muuttaneen Jessin, jonka kanssa sovimme tapaavamme illallisella seuraavana päivänä.
Sushi was excellent in Furusato Sushi. I had both Hawaiian Sunset and Philadelphia roll. The we had drinks at Tiki's bar nearby hostel. We met thee Jess, who had just moved to Hawaii from Minnesota. We agreed to have a dinner the following day.
31/80: Diamond Head 30.11.2014

Kävelin Diamond Headiin päin, mutta ensin kävin myöhäisellä aamiaisella eräässä paikallisessa kahvilassa:

Olin liikkeellä ilman karttaa, ja lopulta päädyin Diamond Headin ranta-alueille. En vain tajunnut, että jostakin olisi ilmeisesti päässyt kipuamaan näköalapaikalle ylös asti. Googlen kuvahausta löytyy muutakin kuin rantakuvia. Minä missasin lopulta sen pääjutun, mutta näin sentään Diamond Headin majakan läheltä – edellisenä päivänä olin nähnyt sen bussista.
I was walking without a map, and finally I got to the beach areas at Diamond Head. I just wasn't aware of, that you should find your way up to the lookout. You can see alsp other things than just beach photos in the Google search. I missed the main thing, but at least I saw the lighthouse nearby – the day before I had seen it from the bus.
Palasin hostellille ja tapasin Rachelin kanssa Jessin seitsemältä. Menimme Atlantis-ravintolaan mukavalle illalliselle. Ruoka oli hyvää, mutta takuulla Waikikista löytyy vieläkin parempia paikkoja.
I went back to the hostel and I met Jess with Rachel at 7 pm. We went to have a nice dinner at restaurant called Atlantis. The food was good but for sure there are even better restaurants in Waikiki.
32/80: Eksyksissä ostoskeskuksessa / Lost in a Shopping Center 1.12.2014
Maanantaina menin Ala Moanan ostoskeskukseen hankkimaan muutamia tarvikkeita matkalleni ja etsimään kirjakaupasta hyvää luettavaa. Ostoskeskus on iso ja sokkeloinen, ja käytin paljon aikaa pelkästään oikeiden paikkojen löytämiseen. Lopulta löysin sekä kirjan että tarvikkeet
On Monday I went to Ala Moana shopping center to buy some supplies for my travel and to find something to read from a book store. It took a lot of time just to find the right places in such a big shopping center. Finally I got both the book and other supplies.
Olin alun perin ajatellut käydä tutustumassa keskustan vanhoihin rakennuksiin, joita olin nähnyt bussin kyydissä perjantaina Pearl Harboriin mennessäni. Käytettyäni ison osan päivästä ostoskeskuksella päätin jättää ne väliin ja kävellä takaisin hostellille rantaa pitkin. Tein sen kaikessa rauhassa seuraavan tunnin, puolentoista aikana.
Originally I had thought to go to have a closer look in old buildings in the centre, that I had seen from the bus window on my way to Pearl Harbor. After I had spent most of the day at the shopping center I decided to skip them and walk back to the hostel along the beach. I took my time, and it took altogether about an hour or hour and half.
Juuri auringon laskiessa kuulin vastaantulijan sanovan "Finland!" – mikä sattuma, mies joka oli ruokaillut samassa pöydässä luaussa Lahainassa vajaa viikko aiemmin käveli vastaani Waikikin rannalla.
Just during the sunset I suddenly heard a man who was coming from the opposite direction to say "Finland!" A man who had dined in the same table in the luau in Lahaina about a week before was there at the Waikiki Beach at the same time. What a small world!
Auringon laskettua menin illalliselle jälleen Furusato Sushiin, koska edellinen illallinen oli ollut siellä niin hyvä. Tällä kertaa otin sateenkaari-lajitelman (olisiko ollut $26?).
After sunset I had another dinner at Furusato Sushi, because the dinner had been so good the other night. This time I chose the rainbow plate (it was maybe $26).
Toivon todella palaavani joskus Havaijille. Haluan käydä kaikilla Havaijin saarilla! Vaikka Waikikissa ja lähialueilla on paljon nähtävää ja todella mukava tunnelma, kannattaa ehdottomasti mennä myös jollekin toiselle saarelle pois suurkaupungin hälinästä.
I really hope I will come back to Hawaii one day. I want to go to all of the Hawaiian islands! Even though there's a lot to see and a really nice atmosphere also in Waikiki and surroundings, it is definitely worthwhile to go to another island away from the big city.
