Today I arrived by Air Asia flight to Taipei, Taiwan, and that was the beginning for the last two weeks of my trip. In this blog post I return to New Zealand, where I was travelling almost four weeks ago.
40/80: Auckland - Paihia 9.12.2014
Herätyskello soi tiistaiaamuna kuudelta. Menin linja-autoasemalle viiden minuutin kävelymatkan päähän puoli kahdeksaksi. Sitä ennen ehdin ostaa asemalta aamupalaa. Bussi lähti varttia vaille kahdeksan, mutta asemalla on oltava varttia aiemmin. Lipun olin ostanut internetsivulta muutamalla dollarilla useita kuukausia sitten.
Alarm went on at 6 am on Tuesday morning. I went to the bus station about 5 minutes walk from my hostel for half past seven. Before that I bought some breakfast from the bus station. The bus left at quarter to eight, but you need to be at the bus station fifteen minutes beforehand. I had bought the ticket, for just a few dollars, several months ago online.

Bussi pysähtyi puoli kymmenen jälkeen huoltoasemalla 15 minuutin ajan. Sitten matka jatkui kohti pohjoista. Bussi pysähteli matkan varrella pienillä paikkakunnilla. Näkymät olivat kovin vehreät. Osa teistä oli todella mutkaisia, mutta onneksi en juuri kärsinyt matkapahoinvoinnista pientä huonoa oloa lukuunottamatta. Saavuimme Paihiaan puolenpäivän jälkeen jonkin verran aikataulusta jäljessä.
The bus stopped at a gas station for 15 minutes at half past nine. Then we continued towards north. We arrived to Paihia in the afternoon little bit behind schedule.
Päivä oli sateinen ja meri oli sumun ja pilvien täyttämä, joten suunnittelemani puolen päivän risteily ei tuntunut hyvältä idealta. Puin sadetakin päälleni ensimmäistä kertaa koko matkan aikana. Kävelin kilometrin päähän Seabeds-hostellille ja pääsin heti kirjautumaan sisään. Hostelli vaikutti todella hyvältä alusta alkawn, mutta wifi-yhteys oli aivan onneton. Olisin halunnut katsoa vielä TripAdvisorista retkien arvioita ennen ostopäätöksen tekemistä.
It was a rainy day and the sea was filled with fog and clouds, so the half day cruise I had planned to take didn't feel like such a good idea. I put my raincoat on for the first time during the whole journey. I walked a kilometer to the hostel called Seabeds, and I could check in right away. The hostel was very good from the beginning, but the wifi was poorest I have had. I would have wanted to check reviews from TripAdvisor before buying any.
Sää selkeni hieman, ja lähdin kävellen takaisin Paihian keskustaan. Sää tuntui sen verran kolealta, että pitkähihaiset vaatteet osoittautuivat pitkästä aikaa hyödyllisiksi. Ostettuani liput seuraavien päivien retkille (yhdistelmälippu yhteensä NZD 199, eli noin 128 euroa) kävin muutamassa matkamuistomyymälässä ja söin minttusuklaajäätelön. :)
The weather cleared a bit, and I walked back to the centre of Paihia. The weather felt cold, and after a long time there was some use for long-sleeved clothes. After I bought my tickets to the day trips for following days (combo ticket total NZD 199, which is about 128 euros) I went to a couple of souvenir shops and had a mint chocolate ice cream. :)

On my way back to the hostel I saw a sail boat which looked almost like a pirate ship.
Vietin illan hostellilla oman huoneen rauhassa, koska hostellihuone on jaettu kolmeen eri tilaan ja ensimmäisenä yönä yövyin ta'aimmassa tilassa yksin. Hain noutoruokaa kadun toiselta puolelta juuri ennen pimeää.
I spent the evening at the hostel in the luxury of my own room, as the dorm room was divided into three separate spaces and the first night I stayed alone in the space in the back. I got some takeaway food from the other side of the street just before dark.
41/80: Northland: Puketi Forest, Cape Reinga & 90 Mile Beach 10.12.2014
Keskiviikkona menin jälleen opastetulle kiertoajelulle, koska Cape Reingaan ei ole tietääkseni mitään julkisia liikenneyhteyksiä. Cape Reinga oli yksi suurimpia syitä, miksi päätin tulla ylipäätään Uuteen-Seelantiin. Päivä oli kokonaisuudessaan onnistunut. Toki jos olisin ollut liikkeellä omaan tahtiin, olisin viettänyt Cape Reingassa tunteja vajaan tunnin sijaan. Valitettavasti aamu ei alkanut kovin positiivisissa merkeissä loistavasta säästä huolimatta. Ensin jouduin etsimään edellisenä päivänä ostamaani lippua parikymmentä minuuttia. Se löytyi lopulta, ja ehdin käydä ostamassa pullon vettä, ottaa kuvan rannasta, joka näytti ihan erilaiselta taivaan ollessa pilvetön ja ehdin vielä odotella bussia jonkun tovin. Pian bussiin noustuani huomasin, että kameran linssinsuojuksessa on vikaa ja se jää osittain linssin päälle. Tämä tarkoittaa sitä, että minun pitää painaa linssinsuojus itse alas joka kerta laittaessani kameran päälle. Mietin jo uuden kameran ostamista, mutta ehkä pärjään tällä kameralla tämän matkan loppuun.
On Wednesday I took yet another guided bus tour, because there is no public transportation to Cape Reinga, at least that I know of. Cape Reinga was one of the main reasons, why I overall came to New Zealand. Day successed very well overall. If I had visited Cape Reinga at my own pace, I would have spent there hours, not just about an hour. Sadly my morning didn't start that well despite of the excellent weather. First I searched for the tour ticket, that I had bough the day before, for about 20 minutes. I found it eventually, and even had time to buy a bottle of water and take a picture of the beach that looked totally different when the sky was clear, and then I was waiting for the bus for some time. Soon after I got to the bus I noticed, that there was a malfunction in the lense cover of my camera. That means that I need to push the lense cover manually down every time when I open my camera. I was already thinking about buying a new camera, but maybe I will manage with this one until the end of this trip.

Kävimme ensin Puketin metsässä katsomassa jättiläismäisiä kauripuita. Vierailu ei ollut kovin pitkä, eli luonteeltaan enemmän jaloittelu katkaisemaan pitkiä bussimatkoja (Cape Reinga on Paihiasta yhteensä lähes neljän tunnin ajomatkan päässä). Kuvat metsästä ovat aiemmassa blogipäivityksessä. Päivän seuraavat pysähdykset olivat aamiaisstoppi kahvilassa ja retken hintaan kuulunut lounas. Kahvilan vieressä oli ranta, joka oli täynnä simpukankuoria, ja kävin keräämässä muutaman itselleni matkamuistoksi.
We visited briefly Puketi forest, where we saw the gigantic kauri trees. It was just a small stop along the way to Cape Reinga, which is almost four hours away from Paihia by bus. Photos from the forest are in the earlier blog post. Day's next stops were having breakfast at a café and a complimentary lunch. There was a beach full of shells next to the café, and I went to collect some as souvenirs for myself.

Saavuimme Cape Reingaan alkuiltapäivästä. Näkymät olivat mahtavat, ja oli erityistä nähdä Tasmanian meren ja Tyynenmeren kohtaaminen konkreettisesti veden pyörteissä. Myös majakka oli todella kaunis. Kuvat ovat pääosin aiemmassa blogipäivityksessä. Minä ja Alicia, johon olin tutustunut lounaalla, olimme viimeisten joukossa takaisin bussilla.
We arrived to Cape Reinga in the afternoon. The view was amazing, and it was very special to see the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean to meet. Also the lighthouse was really beautiful. Photos are mainly in the earlier blog post. Me and Alicia, who I had started talking with during the lunch, were among the last ones back at the bus.

Seuraavaksi ohjelmassa oli mäenlaskua hiekkadyyneillä. Niskani oireili jo pelkästä bussimatkustamisesta, joten jätin tämän väliin pahempien kipujen pelossa. Kaikenikäisillä osallistujilla, bussikuski mukaan lukien, näytti olevan hauskaa kuin pulkkamäessä konsanaan:
Next in the program was sand boarding at the sand dunes. My neck was sore only because of travelling in the bus, so I skipped this activity, afraid of worse pain. Participants from all age groups, including the bus driver, seemed to have lots of fun:
Päivän viimeinen käyntikohde ennen paluumatkaa oli ajaminen pitkin 90 Mile Beachiä (joka ei kuskin mukaan ole 90 mailin mittainen, eikä nimen taustasta ole ilmeisesti varmuutta). Pysähdyimme rannalle hetkeksi. Kuski oli muistuttanut että kengät kannattaa jättää autoon, mutta minä en tietenkään uskonut, ja iso aalto tietenkin huuhteli kenkäni merivedellä kesken kuvien ottamisen. Ne olivat sentään jalassa, joten aalto ei vienyt niitä mukanaan.
The last stop of the day was driving along 90 Mile Beach and a short stop at the beach. The driver had reminded to take your shoes off, the guidance I of course didn't follow, and a big wave came while taking photos. At least I was wearing them, so the wave didn't take them.
Paluumatkasta suurin osa meni nukkuessa. Bussi pysähtyi hostellin kohdalla puoli seitsemän aikaan. Yksitoista tuntia kestäneen retken jälkeen nukahdin kesken elokuvan katsomisen. Retki oli hintansa arvoinen, vaikka lounas olisi voinut olla vähän parempi. Kuski/opas, joka on itse maori, esitti matkan aikana kolme heidän kulttuurinsa laulua ja hänellä oli suurimmaksi osaksi ihan mielenkiintoiset jututkin, teki valtavasti lisäarvoa retkelle.
I slept the most of the ride back to Paihia. The bus stopped at the hostel at 6.30 pm. After a trip that took 11 hours I fell asleep when I was watching a movie. The tour was worth te money, although the lunch could have been a little better. The driver/guide, Maori himself, performed three songs of their culture and had mostly quite interesting stories to tell, and he made a lot of extra value to the trip.
42/80: Delfiinejä ja Russellin pikkukaupunki / Dolphin Watching & Russell 11.12.2014
Tiistaina retkilippuja ostaessani olin sopinut, että voisin vaihtaa puolen päivän risteilyn toiseen ajankohtaan, jos torstaiaamuna sataisi. Aamu oli sateinen, mutta minulla ei ollut tietoa, paranisiko sää iltapäivän tai perjantain aikana, joten laitoin sadetakin päälle ja lähdin kävelemään satamaan puolen päivän risteilyä varten. Satamassa sain kuulla, että vaihtelevan sateista säätä oli luvattu viikonloppuun asti. Siispä nousin katamaraaniin. Lähdimme matkaan yhdeksältä. Päivän kuvat ovat pääosin aiemmassa blogipäivityksessä.
When I bought trip tickets on Tuesday I had been promised, that I could change the time of the cruise of it was raining on Thursday morning. The morning was rainy, but I had no idea if the weather would get any better during Thursday or on Friday, so I put my raincoat on and left to the harbour. In the harbour they told me that it was supposed to rain more or less until weekend. That's why I went on board to the catamaran that left at 9 am. Photos from the day are mainly in an earlier blog post.
Risteilyn kohokohta oli – yllättäen ;) – tietenkin delfiinien näkeminen. Delfiinien katselu toteutetaan ainakin tällä risteilyllä Uudessa-Seelannissa oikein, eli heille ei heitellä ruokaa tai muita houkuttimia. Olin nähnyt pari delfiiniä katamaraanin vieressä ja useamman vähän kauempana. Kapteeni kuulutti myös hain olevan laivan edustalla, mutta sitä en nähnyt. Menin tähystämään kaukana olevia delfiinejä katamaraanin takaosaan, kun lähdimme liikkeelle ja samalla kapteeni kuulutti, että delfiinit saattaisivat jahdata alusta. Ja niin kävikin! Olin sattumalta aitiopaikalla näkemässä useiden delfiinien hyppivän.
The highlight of the cruise – surprisingly ;) – was to see dolphins. In New Zealand it is done the right way at least on this cruise – no food or other luring things are thrown to the water. I had seen a couple of dolphins next to the catamaran, and multiple further away. The captain had also said that there was a shark in front of the catamaran, which I sadly didn't see. I went to see the dolphins further away to the back of the vessel when we were leaving, and just at the same time the captain said that dolphins might try to catch the catamaran. And that is what happened! I was by a coincidence in the exactly right spot to see many dolphins jumping close by.
Katamaraani pystyi etenemään Hole in the Rockille asti huonosta säästä huolimatta, muttemme voineet mennä tunnelin läpi niissä sääolosuhteissa. Myöskään saaripysähdys ei sateisen sään vuoksi ollut niin mukava kuin se olisi ollut toisenlaisella säällä.
The catamaran went to the Hole in the Rock despite of the bad weather, but we could't go through the tunnel in those weather conditions. Also the island stop wasn't that enjoyable as it would have been on a different weather.
Paluumatkalla näimme lisää delfiinejä. Katamaraanin saapuessa Russeliin, joka on lyhyen matkan päässä Paihiasta, sää yhtäkkiä selkeni. Päätin jäädä pois Russelissa, koska olin joka tapauksessa suunnitellut käyväni pikkukaupungissa, joka oli aikanaan ollut Uuden-Seelannin pääkaupunki. Lounaan jälkeen kävelin keskustassa ja kirjoitin pidemmän tovin postikortteja samalla meren aaltoja kuunnellen. Sitten kävelin näköalapaikalle ja vielä rannalle, josta pyysin autolla liikkeellä olleelta naisseurueelta kyydin takaisin satamaan ja annoin heille vaivanpalkaksi 10 dollaria. Palasin seitsemältä lähteneellä lautalla Paihiaan ja kävelin hostellille. Huoneessani edellisestä illasta lähtien majoittunut saksalainen nainen kertoi päivästään Cape Reingan retkellä, joka oli suurelta osin epäonnistunut ikävän sään takia. Sain siis olla kiitollinen, että edes edellisenä päivänä oli ollut hyvä sää koko päivän ajan, ja Bay of Islandsissa sää saattaa olla täysin erilainen kuin mitä ennusteessa luvataan. Iltapäivän sää olisi ollut täydellinen risteilylle, mutta toisaalta en olisi siinä tapauksessa ehtinyt ehkä käymään Russellissa lainkaan.
On the way back we saw more dolphins. When the catamaran arrived to Russell just a short ferry ride away from Paihia, the sky suddenly cleared. I decided to get off from the cruise in Russell, as I had planned to visit this little town, formerly the capital of New Zealand, anyway. After lunch I had a walk in the centre and spent a while in writing postcards listening the sea at the same time. Then I walked up to see the amazing view, and further to the beach. There I asked a lift back to the harbour from some women who were just leaving by car, and as a thank you I gave them 10 dollars. I came back to Paihia by ferry that left around 7 pm, and walked back to the hostel. There I met the German woman who had stayed in the same room since Wednesday. She told about her day at the Cape Reinga tour that hadn't been very enjoyable because of the bad weather. I needed to be thankful that on my day in Cape Reinga the weather had been perfect, and it seems to be so that in Bay of Islands the weather can be the opposite to the weather forecast. The weather in the afternoon would have been perfect for the cruise, but in that case I might haven't had time to visit Russell at all.
43/80: Waitangi Treaty Grounds & Paihia - Auckland 12.12.2014
Perjantaina menin käymään hostellilta kävelymatkan päässä olevassa Waitangissa, jota oli suositeltu minulle Paihian vierailukohteeksi ollessani Fidžillä. Päivä oli sateinen, ja se himmensi vierailua paikkaan, joka on osin ulkoilmakohde. Waitangissa pääsee tutustumaan maorien kulttuuriin muun muassa perinteisen tanssi- ja musiikkiesityksen muodossa. Itse paikka on merkittävä Uuden-Seelannin historiassa, koska siellä sovittiin Uuden-Seelannin siirtomaa-asemasta 6.2.1840.
On Friday I went to visit Waitangi, which is a walk distance away from the hostel. It had been recommended to me while I was in Fiji. The day was rainy, and it worsened the visit t a partly outdoor sight. You can get to know the Maori culture in a traditional dance and music performance. The place is significant because it's the place where the treaty between the Britain and Maori was signed on 6th of February 1840.
Kävelin takaisin hostellille, hain matkatavarani ja jatkoin salaattilounaalle Paihian keskustaan. Odotin bussia satamakahvilassa kirja lukien. Bussi lähti Paihiasta neljän jälkeen iltapäivällä. Reitillä oli sijaiskuski, joten saavuimme Aucklandiin yli puoli tuntia myöhässä. Kävelin takaisin hostellille, jossa rinkkani oli onneksi edelleen tallessa matkatavarahuoneessa.
I walked back to the hostel, picked up my luggage and continued to the centre of Paihia to have a salad lunch. For the rest of the afternoon I was waiting to the bus in the café at the harbour, reading a book. The bus left from Paihia after 4 pm in the afternoon. We arrived to Auckland over an half an hour late from the schedule, as the driver was new to the route. I walked back to the hostel, where my backpack was still safely in the luggage room.
Uuden-Seelannin pohjoisosa oli todella mielenkiintoinen kohde, vaikka sää olisikin voinut olla parempi. Pidin vierailustani paljon, ja voin helposti kuvitella matkustavani tänne vielä joskus uudelleen. Tämä kannattaa ehdottomasti yhdistää Aucklandin vierailuun. Paihia oli sopiva tukikohta vierailuille eri puolille. Kolme yötä oli hyvä kesto, mutta olisin viihtynyt pidempäänkin!
The nort part of New Zealand was really interesting destination even though the weather could have been better. I liked my visit a lot, and I can easily imagine that I will travel here again in the future. I recommend to combine this to your holiday if you're visiting Auckland. Paihia was a suitable base to visit different parts of Northland and the Bay of Islands. Three nights was a good length of the visit, but I could have spent there even more time!
