I arrived yesterday to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. My week in New Zealand in the beginning of the month began from Auckland and ended there. In between I visited Northland, that I tell about in another blog post.
38/80: Nadi - Auckland 7.12.2014
Menin lentokentälle puoli kahdeksan jälkeen ollakseni ajoissa, mutta heti sinne saavuttuani sain tietää, että lento lähtisi myöhässä, joten minulla olikin runsaasti aikaa. Flunssa tuntui onneksi olevan melkein ohi.
I went to the airport just after 7.30 am to be there on time, but as soon as I arrived, I found out, that the flight was delayed. That's why I had a lot of extra time. Luckily it felt like the cold was almost gone.
Saavuin Aucklandiin alkuiltapäivästä. Jo lentokentällä maorien kulttuuri oli hienosti esillä (ks. kuva alla). Maahantulokortin kanssa kannattaa olla tarkkana, koska tullissa ollaan tarkkana esimerkiksi sen suhteen, onko mukana kenkiä, joissa voisi olla toisen maan maaperää. Kuulin tapauksesta, jossa vaelluskengät oli jätetty ilmoittamatta ja sakko siitä on NZD 400 eli noin 255 euroa. Selvitin tullissa tunnollisesti mukanani olevia rannalta keräämiäni simpukankuoria, mutta pääsin nopeasti eteenpäin. Merkinnät matka-apteekin mukana kantamisesta eivät näyttäneet kiinnostavan lainkaan (eivät edes tarkastaneet, mitä lääkkeitä minulla oli mukana).
I arrived to Auckland during early afternoon. Already at the airport you could see Maori culture, which was great (see photo below). You need to pay attention to your customs declaration, because they pay attention for example to any soil you might be carrying in your hiking boots, and the fine of undeclared hiking boots it NZD 400 which is about 255 euros. I declared shells I had with me, but I got quickly through. They didn't seem to pay any attention on my marks about some travel medicine with me – they didn't even check, what kind of medicine it was.
Menin keskustaan bussilla (meno-paluu NZD 28, eli noin 18 euroa). Attic Backpackers -hostellille ei ollut bussipysäkiltä kuin muutaman minuutin kävelymatka. Oli jo check-in -aika, joten sain viedä tavarat suoraan neljän hengen huoneeseen. Hostelli oli oikein hyvä: siistit huoneet, hyvät yhteiset tilat ja erinomainen sijainti.
I took the express bus to the centre (return NZD 28, about 18 euros). Attic Backpackers hostel was only a couple of minutes walk away from the bus stop. It was already check-in time, so I could take my backpack straight to the four bed dorm. The hostel was very good: clean rooms, well maintained common spaces and an excellent location.
Lähdin tutkimaan kaupungin keskustaa, ja huomasin pienen sushipaikan nimeltään Your Best Sushi. Se oli aivan mahtava, edullinen sushipaikka, jossa kävin monena päivänä.
I left to explore the city centre, and I noticed a small sushi place called Your Best Sushi. It was an excellent, affordable sushi place, where I went to on many days.

39/80: Rangitoto Island 8.12.2014
Maanantaipäivä alkoi lounaalla – tai oikeastaan kahdella ;) – Your Best Sushissa.
I started my Monday with two sushi lunches at Your Best Sushi.
Kävelin pitkin Queen Streetiä satamaan ja ostin itselleni lipun (NZD 60, noin 38 euroa), jolla pääsi Rangitoton saaren lauttaan ja opastetulle kierrokselle saarella. Kuvia lauttamatkalta:
I walked along Queen Street to the harbour and bought a ticket (NZD 60, about 38 euros), which entitled me to the ferry ride to Rangitoto Island and a guided tour at the island. Photos taken from the ferry:
Rangitoton vulkaanisella saarella käynti oli todella mielenkiintoinen kokemus. Kuvat ovat aiemmassa blogipäivityksessä. Vaikka menen yleensä mieluummin yksin omaa vauhtia kuin opastetulla kierroksella, tällä kertaa opastettu kierros oli mielestäni oikea valinta. Opas/kuski asuu saarella ja hänellä oli paljon kiinnostavaa kerrottavaa. Lähestyessämme saaren korkeinta kohtaa kiipesimme 100 askelmaa, ja ehdimme huipulle ennen kuin upea näköala peittyi pilvien taakse.
It was a really interesting experience to visit the volcanic Rangitoto Island. Photos are mainly in the earlier blog post. Although I usually prefer going on my own than taking a guided tour, this time it was the right decision to take the guided tour. Guide/driver lives on the island, and he had lots to tell about the island. When we approached the highest point we climbed the 100 stairs up, and we made it to the top just before the magnificent view was covered with clouds.

44/80: Waiheke Island 13.12.2014
Lauantaina, palattuani maan pohjoisosasta edellisenä iltana – yllätys, yllätys – aloitin päivän Your Best Sushissa. :)
On Saturday, after I had cane back from Northland on Friday evening – surprise, surprise – I began my day in Your Best Sushi. :)
Lähdin kello 13:n lauttaan Waiheken saarelle (meno-paluu NZD 36), ja satamassa oli tutun yhtiön loistoristeilijä.
I took the 1 pm ferry to Waiheke Island (return NZD 36), and there was a cruise ship by a familiar cruise line in the harbour).
Vajaan tunnin lauttamatkan jälkeen saavuin Waihekeen, jossa satoi hieman. Päätin silti liikkua saarella kävellen. Saarella olisi ollut myös opastettu viinitilakierros ja busseja, mutta kumpikaan vaihtoehto ei houkuttanut. Vierailin kolmella viinitilalla, jotka ovat lähinnä satamaa: Jurassic Ridge, Mudbrick ja Cable Bay. Kävelyä tuli muutama kilometri. Kuvat ovat pääosin aiemmassa blogipäivityksessä. Kolmen viinin maisteleminen Jurassic Ridgessä maksoi NZD 5 (kaikkien viinien maistaminen olisi ollut NZD 10), Mudbrickin viisi valkoviinitilkkaa maksoi NZD 10 (ks. muut hinnat aiemman päivityksen kuvasta) ja kolmen viinin maistelu Cable Bayssa maksoi NZD 6 (kaikki viisi olisivat olleet yhteensä NZD 10). Waiheken viinitiloilla oli selvästi totuttu siihen, etteivät kaikki vieraat tule paikalle opastettujen kierrosten mukana, joten oman viinitilakierroksen muodostaminen oli vaivatonta. Saarella kaikki rypäleet kerätään kuulemma käsin (tosin kaikki viinitilojen rypäleet eivät tietenkään tule Waihekesta). Jo pilvisellä säällä viinitilojen täyttämä saari näytti mukavalta, joten voin vain kuvitella, miltä siellä näyttää auringon paistaessa!
After about an hour in the ferry I arrived to rainy Waiheke Island. Despite of that I decided to walk. There would have been a guided bus tour to the vineyards and some buses, but neither option was tempting enough. I visited the three vineyards that are the nearest ones to the harbour: Jurassic Ridge, Mudbrick, and Cable Bay. It was a walk of some kilometres. Photos are mainly in the earlier blog post. It cost only NZD 5-10 to taste the white wines (for all wines it would have been double), so you can happily also make your own wine tour in on Waiheke Island. I was told, that all the grapes in Waiheke are harvested by hand (though all the grapes of these vineyards don't come from Waiheke). As it looked really nice already on a cloudy weather, I can only imagine how the island looks like when it's sunny!
Päivä oli mainio, kunnes taitoin nilkkani sateen liukastuttamalla lauttarampilla. Sain heti kylmäpussin ja jalan koholle sekä sidottua nilkan, joten selvisin säikähdyksellä ja parin päivän kivuilla sen sijaan, että koko loppureissu olisi mennyt pilalle. Luin illalla alkuviikosta ostamani kirjan loppuun, ja seuraavana aamuna vaihdoin sen toiseen kirjaan hostellin kirjavaihtohyllyssä.
The day was great until just when coming back to the ferry I twisted my ankle on the slippery surface when entering the ferry. Luckily I got a cold bag and I could keep my foot up, and I got a bandade, so it hurt only a couple of days. In the evening I finished the book that I had bought in the beginning of the week, and the next morning I swapped it to another one in the hostel's book exchange.
45/80: Sateinen päivä / Another Rainy Day 14.12.2014
Sää ei suosinut Uudessa-Seelannissa, ja herätessäni sunnuntaina uuteen sateiseen päivään en enää halunnut lähteä katselemaan nähtävyyksiä sateenvarjon alta. Vietin aamupäivän hostellilla ja alkuiltapäivästä menin viereisessä korttelissa sijaitsevaan elokuvateatteriin katsomaan elokuvatarjontaa. Menin katsomaan Nälkäpelin Matkijanärhen osan 1, joka oli yllättävän hyvä etenkin verrattuna edelliseen Nälkäpeli-elokuvaan.
The weather hadn't been that good during my stay in New Zealand, and when I woke up on Sunday morning to another rainy day, I didn't feel like doing sightseeing under my umbrella. I spent the morning in the hostel and in the early afternoon I went to check from the cinema in the next block, if they would have anything I wanted to watch. I went to watch Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 1, which was pretty good especially compared with the previous Hunger Games movie.
Kävellessäni Aucklandin keskustassa huomasin Tank-terveyskahvilan/ravintolan, josta sai todella maistuvan ja tuoreen salaatin ja mehun.
As I walked n the centre of Auckland I noticed a health café/restaurant called Tank, where I got a really tasty and fresh salad and a juice.
Kävin ostamassa vielä uuden kirjan kirjakaupasta lentokenttäyötä varten. Ennen pimeää muistin ikuistaa nämä nerokkaat liikennevalot ja suojatiemerkinnät – kyllä uusiseelantilaiset ovat fiksuja, kun liikennevalot palavat jalankulkijoille joka suuntaan samaan aikaan ja asfalttiinkin on merkitty, että risteyksen voi ylittää myös vinottain!
I went to buy another book from the bookshop for my night at the airport. Before it became dark I remembered to take a photo about these genious traffic lights – they are really clever in New Zealand, as you can cross roads to any direction you want to, also in the middle!
Huomasin hukanneeni päivän aikana pienen rannekukkaroni, ja kävin etsimässä sitä tuloksetta muun muassa elokuvateatterilta illan jo pimennyttyä. Menetys ei ollut taloudellisesti suuri – jäin kaipaamaan enemmän kätevää kukkaroa kuin sisällä ollutta 20 dollaria. Lähdin yhdentoista jälkeen lentokentälle bussilla ja luin kirjoja aamukolmeen saakka, eli kunnes check-in heti kuuden jälkeen lähteneelle lennolle aukesi. Lentokentällä oli hyvin rauhallista, mutta vain ennen maastalähtötarkastusta oleva puoli näytti olevan Aucklandin kentällä yöllä avoinna, tai ainakaan läpi ei olisi päässyt. Tarkastus avautui vasta aamuviiden jälkeen. Uudessa-Seelannissa on käytössä maahantulokortin lisäksi myös maastalähtökortti, joka piti olla täytettynä tarkastusta varten.
I noticed I had lost my little wrist pocket, and I went to look for that for example from the cinema. It wasn't a big economical loss – I was more sad about losing the handy wrist pocket than the 20 dollars in it. I left to the airport after 11 pm and read my books until 3 am, when the check-in opened. It was really calm at the airport during nighttime, but apparently only the side before all security checks is open at night time, or at least it wasn't possible to get through before 5 am. You need to fill a form also when leaving New Zealand, not only when entering.
Aucklandin ydinkeskusta oli suht samantyyppinen kuin minkä tahansa suurkaupungin ydinkeskusta. Molemmat vierailemani saaret, Rangitoto ja Waiheke, olivat ehdottomasti käymisen arvoisia, ja paremmalla säällä olisin viettänyt sunnuntain todennäköisesti Davenportissa lyhyen lauttamatkan päässä Queen Streetin päässä olevasta satamasta. Aurinkoisemmalla säällä Auckland olisi takuulla jättänyt vielä positiivisemman vaikutelman, mutta pilviselläkin säällä kaupunki oli todella kiva.
The centre of Auckland was similar to any big cities. Both islands thatI visited, Rangitoto and Waiheke, were definitely worthwhile visiting, and if the weather had been better, I would have spent Sunday in Davenport just a short ferry ride away from the harbour in the end of Queen Street. On a more sunny weather I would have got even better impression about Auckland, but it was really nice even on a cloudy weather.
